1. When does Commentarius end?
In January of Lily and James’s 7th-year.
2. Why January? Why not all year?
It’s simply because that’s the way the plot goes/is planned. In January, the story I mean to tell is over. To extend it past that really isn’t appealing to me and I don’t think it would be appealing to you, either. By the end of the story, I think you will be content.
3. How many chapters are left?
I honestly couldn’t say. I often end up changing the length of time each chapter spans and I don’t know I’m changing it until I’m writing it. Therefore, it is literally impossible to predict or pinpoint an exact chapter total
4. What does ‘Commentarius’ mean, anyway?
I went through a phase where I thought every decent HP fic had to have a Latin title. So when I began this little ol’ story, I went to a Latin/English online translator and just started playing around with words until I came up with ‘Commentarius’, which incidently means ‘diary’ in Latin. I thought it apt.
5. Why is everyone asking for/referring to Chapter 25 when there are already 31 chapters?
25/32 are the same thing. Commentarius is presently posted in two places: UR and FFnet. There are presently 24 chapters on UR but 31 chapters on FFnet because FFnet used to have a size limit on the chapters you could upload and so I had to cut several chapters into two parts (starting at chapter 14, several chapters have “Part 1” and “Part 2”). They’ve recently removed that limit so it’s no longer an issue, but going back and changing the chapters now would be too confusing, so I haven’t. Regardless, both sites have the same story up to the same point. It’s just different chapter numbers.
6. Where is Snape/Slughorn/other random canon detail?
Commentarius was actually written pre-HBP. Therefore, it is technically AU. This is why Abbott is the Potions master instead of Slughorn and why there is no Snape/Lily background included. I do not intend to change this. To do so now would mess with the plot and just make things confusing.
7. Will the rating of Commentarius remain PG-13?
Yes. I know us Slaggy McSlaggersons yearn for the smut all day and every day, but for a multitude of reasons, Commentarius will remain PG-13. I won’t shy away from the topic of sex and when/if such a thing becomes an issue, you will be aware of what’s going on, but this will not be Coercion and Competition. Lily will remain her semi-subtle euphemistic self while describing her various rendezvous.
8. Will you write a smutty outtake?
If/when that becomes an issue, I’ll decide. I’m not sure how I feel about that right now. Smut in first-person diary-format could be super awkward.
9. Will you write a one-shot/full-length story/companion piece of Commentarius in James’s POV?
I’m asked this often and I understand why this would seem very appealing, but I’m 99% sure it will never happen. For one thing, to write any scene, even the smallest, from James’s perspective, I’d have to reveal a lot about James himself. Most of his motivations/thoughts are still deliberate secrets in Commentarius, so to do a scene from his POV any justice, those secrets would have to be revealed. I obviously can’t spoil Commentarius like that. Secondly, you only see James from Lily’s perspective. You all love him that way—I love him that way, too! To delve into his head, his voice, could very well change that. And honestly, I’m not certain I could do him justice. I don’t want to risk trying to write his voice and then mess it up and ruin the character. In the long run, it’s just not worth it. He’s imperfectly perfect just the way he is and I’d like him to remain that way.
10. How long between updates/ When does the next chapter come out?
Unfortunately, I have two of the worst fic writer characteristics on my side—I’m a slow updater and I write huge chapters. I am not the student I once was (*sob*) and unfortunately have a real job/life and can’t devote as much time to writing as I wish. Therefore, it is usually at least 3 months between updates. I try to write as fast as I can, but RL often gets in the way. Sorry! =(
11. Will we find out what the things James keeps meaning to tell Lily are?
Yes. Soon.
12. Who is Marley’s attack snogger/When will he be revealed?
There are a few chapters before you find out his identity, but you will find out. And he does play some part other than, you know, obviously snogging Marley. ;D
13. Will Lily find out about Remus being a werewolf/the Marauders being animagus?
I had never intended to include this in Commentarius and at this point, I still don’t. It’s a question I get a lot and I can understand the appeal, but I don’t know if there is even a realistic point in the story where I can pull this off even if I wanted to. If that opportunity does come along, I will take it if I feel like it doesn’t hinder the story, but I won’t force it in. To do so would only leave all of us unsatisfied. So, in a few words: Probably not, but it’s not impossible.
14. What do Lily’s Slag Boots look like?
I’ve always imagined they look something like this.
15. What are your favourite fics?
Here is a brief list of some of them. =)
16. Do you have a Commentarius celebrity dream cast?
I’m actually really not a fan of celebrity dream casts, mostly because I just look at them and think, “Oh. Andrew Garfield. Why are you next to Karen Gillian and why are the names Lily and James scrawled beneath?” I am very much a characters-in-my-head sort of girl. They are uniquely their own. However, other Commentarius fans do not share my same reservations. Here is a slew of fun ones!
17. What music do you listen to when you write?
I’m actually a very big classical/instrumental/soundtrack girl. My issue is, if I’m playing a song with words, I stop paying attention to my writing because I’m too busy singing along to the songs! But if you’re looking for some fun Commentarius songs, there is a very awesome Commentarius fanmix you can jam to. I do often. =)
18. Have you written anything other than Commentarius?
Behold, the Masterlist.
19. I sent an ask and you didn’t answer it! Do you ignore them?
Tumblr has a tradition of eating my asks, so if I haven’t answered yours and you really want a response, try sending it again. I don’t mind doubles. I’ll just delete the spare. But I do get a lot of messages and sometimes I have to pick and choose. I try to get to as many as possible, but sometimes I just can’t. It helps if your question is one I haven’t answered before. Try skimming around the archives before you ask. Also, if you send it non-anon, you have a better chance of me responding, even if it’s a repeat question. I’ll just do it privately (which does not mean I don’t think your question is worthy of the public. It’s simply that I am constantly spamming people’s dashes and I’m trying to cut down on that).
